Report: NYR to Sign Madison Bowey to PTO

As initially reported by Rick Dhaliwal and echoed by Daily Faceoff, it appears that the Rangers could be adding defenseman Madison Bowey to their camp roster on a professional tryout.

Rangers fans may recall Bowey as he had a pair of impressionable seasons with a divisional rival in the Washington Capitals between 2017 and 2019. He finished his rookie year with 12 assists across 51 games and after six points in 33 games the following year, Washington sent him to Detroit as part of a package to acquire defenseman Nick Jensen.

There, Bowey closed out his 2018-19 season with four more points in 17 games with the Red Wings for a total ten points but nearly doubled it the following season. In a career best, Bowey registered 3 goals and 14 assists for a total of 17 points in 53 games. Easily the most NHL games he played in a season but because of COVID, that came to a hard pause. Bowey would struggle to crack an NHL lineup from that point on as he's only appeared in four games since split between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Vancouver Canucks.

At 6"1, 207 lbs, the former second round draft pick (53) has put up respectable numbers in the AHL but has spent the last three seasons playing overseas in the KHL. Throughout which, he's bounced around between three different teams making his brief tenure with the Red Wings the last time he's really shown any stability. It doesn't come as a surprise that the Rangers may be adding another defenseman to their camp roster but there's certainly some intrigue that comes with this choice. It would be quite the story for him to earn a contract this far removed from the NHL but stranger things have undoubtedly happened.
