Ryan McDonagh signs a seven-year extension with Tampa Bay
McD re-ups with the Lightning
Ryan McDonagh, the former New York Rangers’ captain, has signed a seven-year extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The deal is worth $6.75 million per year. McDonagh’s previous contract carried an AAV of $4.7 million. It will expire next summer. He’s now the Bolts’ second-highest paid defenseman. Only Victor Hedman carries a higher cap hit at $7.875 million.

The Rangers sent the captain to Tampa Bay on deadline day along with JT Miller in exchange for Vlad Namestnikov, Brett Howden, Libor Hajek, a 2018 first-round pick, and a conditional 2019 second-round pick. McDonagh picked up five assists in 17 playoff games for Tampa Bay after the trade.
McDonagh turned 29 two weeks ago. Before the deadline day deal, the American defenseman was having something of an off year with the team he had captained for four years.
