Sean Day signs with Tampa Bay
The former Rangers prospect is getting another chance in Florida

On May 30, the Rangers placed Day on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract. Day was the 81st pick of the 2016 Draft — the Rangers’ first selection in that draft. A highly-anticipated player before his junior career began in the OHL, Day was granted exceptional status in 2013 to play with the Mississauga Steelheads at the age of 15. He piled up 158 points in 291 games of OHL hockey before joining the Rangers organization with the Hartford Wolf Pack and the Maine Mariners in 2018-19.
Day bounced between the AHL and ECHL over the past two seasons, struggling to earn and hold a spot on a thin Wolf Pack blue line. He picked up 18 points in 62 games with Hartford and 35 points in 55 games with the Mariners in the ECHL. He spent the majority of the 2019-20 season in Maine.
Tampa signed Day to a one-year, two-way contract. Perhaps the change of scenery will be just what the once highly-touted youngster needs to get his career back on track. He is 22 and will be turning 23 in January 2021.
